Is Purgatory Biblical?

Purgatory is a place where departed souls go to a temporary place to pay for their sins and be cleansed. No where in the Bible does it mention Purgatory. There are only two places one goes after death - either heaven or hell. There is nothing in between. There is no second chance after death to get saved. Purgatory is a Roman Catholic invention. The doctrine of Purgatory was first established by Gregory the Great about the year 593 A.D.

The Bible teaches that the death of Christ was sufficient to save us once and for all from all sin.

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:7-9).

"Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption" (Heb. 9:12).

The Bible talks about heaven and hell. There is no purgatory.

"And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matt. 25:46).
